For four Strings

Exhibition graphic design

National Museum, Prague

2021

For four Strings was an exhibition at the National Museum in Prague dedicated to the history of violin making and performance. Presented within a spatially constrained setting, the exhibition concept is rooted in the anatomy and formal language of the violin. These shapes informed both the architectural and graphic approach, appearing as viewing apertures within the graphics, while strings functioned as a central installation element guiding movement through the space. Lucia Jarosova was responsible for the graphic design concept and exhibition graphics. A key challenge was the limited exhibition area and the need to structure extensive textual information. In response, the design introduces layered perception. The first layer appears on the glass surfaces of the vitrines, where semi-transparent graphic applications act as a soft visual veil, creating depth. Layering continues within the display cases, where exhibits are arranged across multiple planes. The exhibition extends into the surrounding space through graphic elements. Black backgrounds and focused lighting ensure that attention remains on the instruments themselves. Typography and material choices reinforce the exhibition’s restrained character; the selected typeface, with its calligraphic nuances, subtly echoes the handcrafted nature of violin making.
