What Designers can do
Annual publication series
Institute of Design & Communication, FH JOANNEUM
2016–2024
What Designers Can Do is the first publication in a long-running series of annual yearbooks developed for the Institute of Design & Communication at FH JOANNEUM. The bilingual publications present Bachelor’s and Master’s theses alongside contextual material about the institute’s programmes and design practice. The title, authored by Lucia Jarosova as part of a naming system that extends across multiple editions, frames design as an ongoing question rather than a fixed outcome. The editorial and visual challenge was to create a system capable of holding a wide range of interdisciplinary work (from information and media design to sound and exhibition design) in a way that remains clear, accessible, and coherent. Lucia Jarosova developed the concept, editorial strategy, and graphic design of the publication, establishing a visual language and typographic logic that provide orientation across varied content while respecting the specificity of individual projects. What Designers Can Do was awarded the Red Dot Design Award for Communication Design in 2018. Titles in the series: What Designers can do | Was Designer alles machen Why Designers go crazy | Was Designer verrückt macht What Designers can change | Was Designer ändern können Why Designers never sleep | Warum Designer nie schlafen What Designers get into | Wo Designer hinein geraten Why Designers listen closely | Warum Designer genau hinhören Why Designers never stop | Warum Designer nie aufhören
