Frame Form

Annual yearbook

Institute of Design & Communication, FH JOANNEUM

2025

FRAME & FORM is the annual yearbook of the Institute of Design & Communication at FH JOANNEUM. Designed and edited by Lucia Jarosova, it presents the selection of outstanding Bachelor’s and Master’s theses alongside research-based essays by the institute’s lecturers. The publication positions the design thesis as a form of critical research, reflecting the institute’s commitment to design as an responsible, and ethical practice. The title FRAME & FORM, authored by Lucia Jarosova, defines the conceptual logic of the book. “Frame” refers to the act of positioning, questioning, and taking responsibility for the context in which design operates, while “Form” describes how these intentions become visible through design. Together they see design as a continuous dialogue between thinking and making. Six essays by institute´s members establish this shared perspective, addressing themes such as ethics in design, ecology, inclusion, identity, experiment and change. They create a conceptual space in which the students’ work can be read not as isolated projects, but as part of a broader conversation about what design does and what it affects. In the graphic design of the book, this conceptual framing becomes visible. Each thesis is introduced through a typographic headline that generates its own visual “frame” on the page. These frames organise space, guide attention, and give every project a distinct yet coherent presence within the overall system. Lucia Jarosova developed the editorial structure, overall graphic design and layout of the publication and authored the essay “Framing Identity, Forming Diversity.” Her task was to translate a multi-voiced, research-driven body of work into a publication that is clear, accessible, and understandable for target group academia and “non academia”.
